Freshers Address 2009

TEC provided sound, lighting, video and pyrotechnics for Freshers Address 2009. Freshers Address is an event hosted by Nottingham University and the Students Union that officially welcomes the thousands of new students to the university and student life.

The event is held in the Large Sports hall on University Park with makes the PA a challenge due to the less then ideal acoustics of the room. TEC provided 20k ground-stacked Nexo Alpha with PS-15 delays and Alpha-E infill. This setup created an even coverage and the allowed every member of the large audience to hear every word clearly.

The lighting rig utilised more then 20 Martin Mac250s, 6 High-End technobeams, 4 Martin Wizards as well as Source-4 juniors. These were rigged on a mixture of flown trilite and ground supported Litec trussing structures.

Video was taken care of by 3 panasonic 6000 lumin projectors and 8x6 rear projection fastfold screens by 3 broadcast cameras and an apple MacPro using an outside broadcast truck.

Marquee Party 2009

TEC provided sound, lighting and video for the big marquee party at the end of Week One 2009. The event is actually held in the same marquee that is used during the week to house the “Freshers’ Fair”, so it required a quick turn around at the end of week to get the rig up and working for the Friday night party!

The party was split into two: The first half provided the crowd with live performances and DJ music played over our PA system. During the second half we switched over to a silent disco, where all party-goers grabbed their own wireless headphones and we broadcasted two DJs for the remainder of the evening. This proved to be a great success.

The focus of the rig was a large, multi-layered stage at one end of the marquee. The larger lower deck was used as a performance space for some of the University’s performance groups, while the taller deck was used for the live DJs.

Sound wise we put in a 25kw Nexo PA system, along with monitor wedges for the live performers. Lighting wise there were a series of long trusses running all the way down the centre of the 60m long marquee, holding a rig containing more than 20 Mac 250 Kryptons and Washes, Strobes and Blinders. We also provided atmospheric lighting for the huge 40m purpose built bar! We also provided AV equipment for a group of VDJs – this included two 10’ x 8’ rear projection screens and two 6000 lumen projectors!

We are very much looking forward to being part of this event in 2010!

Jubilee

This freshers week event consists of 3 venues that supposedly represent Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. TEC were asked by the Students Union to create 3 different atmospheres for the 3 different venues.

A hall JCR was transformed into ''Heaven'' via cleaver use LED PAR cans and Martin ''ego'' lighting effects. The sound rig was just as simple consisting of 3k Nexo Alpha-E along with our DJ cube. ''Hell'' was set in a hall bar. The lighting rig consisted of a splattering of disco lighting and Flame Effect light boxes. The PA was Nexo PS-15s over LS1200.

TEC were asked to turn the purgatory venue into highly spec club venue. The venue in question is a huge glass atrium that backs onto lake. On the far side of the lake is a highly built up area meaning sound limits are a big issue. To overcome this challenge TEC provided a huge acoustic drape and provided a cleverly designed PA system based around Nexo PS15s. The lighting rig was a ground supported truss structure and made use of Martin Mac250 fixtures, High-End Technobeams Martin Atomic Strobes and a green laser.
